Proceedings of the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of East. R.A Puram
Venue: Boat Club, Chennai
Date: 26th March 2009
Time: 7:30Pm-8:30Pm
A Registration of the members and other participants was solicited. The meeting commenced with a silent prayer in Boat Club at 8.00 PM. The meeting was presided by Rtn. Chinna Sevugan Mrs. Krishna Priya Faculty, Dept of Public Relations, Stella Maris College and her Students were introduced to the gathering.
The campaign Spandana - to make Chennai cardiac safe was presented to the Rotarian members by the students of the Department of public Relations. This target group was strategically selected for the campaign considering the multiplier effect, the voluntary association can bring to the communities that it works with.
A presentation was delivered to the members of the club, which explained the importance of the heart muscle, the statistics which supported, that the heart diseases are becoming the number one killer disease. The risk factors that can be controlled and that cant be, what one can do to safe guard oneself from heart diseases and the importance of providing first aid during a cardiac arrest were highlighted. The members were requested to fill in the KAP questionnaire which was distributed. A English poem on heart was recited to the members.
As a token of gratitude the memento Spandana was presented by Mrs. Krishna Priya, Faculty, Department of Public Relations to Rtn. Chinna Sevugan President of Rotary Club of East A. Puram. Two posters designed by the students were also presented by Mrs. Krishna Priya, Faculty, Department of Public Relations to Rtn. Chinna Sevugan President of Rotary Club of East A. Puram.
The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the president of the club and presented a memento to Mrs. Krishna Priya on behalf of the club.

As a part of the campaign to “make Chennai cardiac safe”, children were identified to be one the most important target group. The students of class VIII A & B of M.CT.M.CHIDAMBARAM CHETTIYAR Higher Secondary were the first group of children addressed for “spandana”. The program started at 8:30 am in the school play ground. It was attended by a group of nearly 60 students accompanied by the class teachers of class VIII and the principal of the school, Dr Vijaylakshmi and Dr Sundari Krishnamoorthy, Head of Department of Public Relations also attended the program.
The program started with an introduction to the campaign, covering the logo of the campaign and the class. This was followed by an oral presentation on general information on heart, common heart diseases, importance of balanced diet, food habits, importance of exercise etc.
The presentation also had a short scenario between a mother and a son in which the mother is telling the importance of nutritious food, exercise, outdoor games etc to her son. The presentation was followed by a poem recital in Tamil, which read the importance of heart after which there was a mime presentation which showcased the importance of good eating habits for a healthy heart.
An interactive quiz was held for the students which had a set of ten questions. The theme of the quiz was a “heart highway”. A green card was shown for every correct answer and the winner for each question was given a prize. Red card was shown for wrong answers.
Questionnaires were distributed to all the students attended which contained general questions on heart, which were covered during the presentation, lifestyle habits and practices of the children and the like. Spandana posters on food habits and heart and a memento were given to the school principal.

The media campaign on Cardiac disease to create awareness for women was conducted for the women’s wing of Kalyan Nagar Association, SADHANA. The presentation was done in English and Tamil, since there was a mixed audience. The students gave an overview and importance of the media campaign and the logo.
The presenters gave information on the symptoms, Preventable Lifestyle risk factors, and other important factors to be considered to prevent heart attack. The presentation was followed by a short mime by the students. The audience enjoyed the miming which depicted how consumption of harmful food and unhealthy life style attract human heart and how good food habit and healthy life style protect the heart. Finally it ended by showing the heart is protected by good food habits and the “SPANDANA” the name of the media campaign saves the heart.

Mr. V. Irai Anbu, Secretary, Tourism and Culture Department and Mr. Rajaram IAS, Commissioner of Tamilnadu Tourism Development Corporation presided the occasion.
